The Lyon’s Share Gallery of Fairhope, Ala. and Kangal Gallery in the Sail Loft of Mobile will feature accomplished artist B’Beth Weldon, well-known for her acts of altruism and award-winning talents. Weldon’s oil on canvas has been selected by Polo committee members as the official Polo at the Point painting and will be unveiled at the Lyon Share gallery at 6 pm, Friday, September 2, 2011, Fairhope's First Friday Art Walk; and at the Kangal Gallery, Mobile at 7 pm on Friday, September 9. Weldon’s passion for color, life, nature, adventure, and travel is captured in her body of work and in this year’s Polo at the Point painting. Her oil sketch is a study of the athleticism and competitive spirit of the polo player in a forehand stroke, powerfully driving the ball. Her bold and expressive brush strokes and painterly style create wonderful movement and anticipation. The artist will also be featured at Polo at the Point and sell her work during the event, donating a portion of the proceeds to the main beneficiaries, Mercy Medical’s Guardian Angel and Thomas Hospital’s Pediatric Rehab Program.
“One’s passion for life is a gift, and should not be wasted. I enjoy the simplicity of life, its beauty, and its lessons. My life is a work in progress with the promise of yet another adventure. It’s very simple: As long as I have breath in my lungs, it’s a red-letter day” said Weldon.
Originally from Mobile, Alabama, Weldon grew up drawing and painting with her mother, Margaret Weldon. Spending most of her summers in Fairhope and Point Clear, Ala., she had the opportunity to learn from various artists and teachers when she was not riding horses. It was her father who encouraged her to “dream big dreams and make them happen.” Weldon graduated from Mount Vernon College and Georgetown University with degrees in Business and Arts and Humanities. She worked in Washington for the Smithsonian and the Capital Children’s Museum. After returning home to the Eastern Shore, she operated a Bed and Breakfast. When Weldon is not volunteering, painting or writing, she owns and operates Prosperity Ridge Ranch, now specializing in sustainable living, and is a real estate investor. Weldon has worked with special needs children through the VSA arts of Alabama, has been commissioned for numerous fundraisers, and served as co-chairman of the silent auction for Polo at the Point and PACE Art Committee.
“As a child, I remember my mother telling me, ‘For those to whom much has been given, much shall be expected.’ One’s use of this concept in life to assist others - whether by a smile, the holding of a hand, or to nurture other random acts of kindness- whether acknowledged or not, is the goal. We are all very blessed to have been given our lives…the challenge is what we do with them! I remember as a child when Point Clear Polo started, then when Point Clear Charities was formed for Polo at the Point. For years, they have been helping others in need and that continues today. In keeping with the tradition, it’s a perfect reason to support the 2011 Polo at the Point,” stated Weldon.
The 2011 Polo at the Point is Sunday, October 16, 2011. Festivities begin with the Player’s Party on Friday night, October 14 at the Grand Hotel Marriott’s Julep Point where guests enjoy hors d'oeuvres, live music and dancing. Sunday's event includes world class polo, gourmet cuisine, champagne, divot stomping, tailgating fun, silent auction, reserved seating in the luncheon tent, garden party attire, and more. Tickets range from $10 (tailgating) to $125. The Children’s Chukkar is a new exhibition added to the half-time event, with players ranging in age from 8 to 15. It will highlight our community's future polo players and provides a great opportunity for children to participate in a great cause. Sponsorships opportunities are still available.
