Since 1988, Polo at the Point has raised millions of dollars that benefited cancer research, local non-profit organizations, and children’s charities. Polo at the Point, a Point Clear Charities event, has become known as one of the area’s most entertaining charity sporting competition and provides a unique experience for fans of polo or those experiencing the majestic sport for the first time. Throughout a weekend, several teams comprised of local, regional and international polo players will compete to play on Sunday, October 16 for the coveted Point Clear Polo Cup. This year, Point Clear Polo has designated Mercy’s Guardian Angel and Thomas Hospital’s Pediatric Rehabilitation program as main beneficiaries of the 2011 Polo at the Point to be held at Sonny Hill-Clearwater Polo Complex in Point Clear, Ala.

Over the past two years, Point Clear Charities, Inc. (PCC) presented Mercy Medical with $200,000 for its Guardian Angel program which supports critically and terminally ill children in their homes. Patients range from birth to 17 years of age, and suffer from cystic fibrosis, leukemia, other cancers and diseases, or severe conditions resulting from a birth defect or injury. Guardian Angel is one of the only programs that provides home healthcare, palliative care and hospice care to children in Mobile and Baldwin counties and serves any child in need, no matter of their family’s ability to pay.

Thomas Hospital’s Pediatric Rehabilitation Program provides comprehensive care to children who require occupational, physical, and speech therapy. The program meets the unique needs of patients – ages birth through adolescence – diagnosed with autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, hearing impairment, muscular dystrophy and other disorders. The state-of-the-art program provides a safe environment for children with special needs to work on their strength, coordination and balance.

The Polo at the Point event is coordinated through an all-volunteer committee, dedicated to hosting the high-level polo tournaments, in a memorable and entertaining event while raising funds for local charities. This year’s committee members include Polo at the Point Co-Chairs Linda Lou Parsons, Jamie Leatherbury and Dawn Pilot; Thomas Hospital Foundation staff members Kathy Baugh and Jeana Barnes; Mercy Medical staff members Donna Wilhelm and Cecilia Mace; Beaux Chapeaux Co-Chair Lisa White; Public Relation Volunteers Pat Johnson, Ange Baggett and Debby LaFayette; Silent Auction Co-Chairs Amy Gray, Shelia Ward and Carolyn McLaughlin; Silent Auction Volunteers Rosie McGowin, Susan Alsup, and Marguerita Riggall; Program Chair Kim Campbell, Program Ad Sales Sadie Cooper; Hospitality Co-Chairs Nancy Tippins and Lexie Jones; Hospitality Volunteer Courtney Silvernail; Merchandise Chair Effie Thompson; Merchandise Committee Thomas Hospital Future Founders; Tailgate Chair Mike Lyons; Luncheon Tent Chair Ashley Daves; Player’s Party and Chukkar Co-Chairs Lacy Radcliff and Elizabeth Jeansonne; Logistic Chair Hunter Lyons; and Ticket Chair Fran Cobb.
